Architecturally, the new parts resemble previously introduced Blackfin processors. For example, the new family members range from a single-core 300 MHz part to a dual-core 600 MHz part. In comparison, older Blackfin parts range from a single-core 300 MHz part to a dual-core 756 MHz part.

However, the new family members offer a significantly wider range of peripherals than prior Blackfin processors. These new peripherals reflect the devices’ focus on networked applications that require controller functionality. New peripherals on the ‘BF534, ‘BF536, and ‘BF537 include eight timers with PWM capability, a CAN controller, and an I²C interface. The ‘BF536 and ‘BF537 also add an Ethernet interface and enhancements to the DMA controller that help the processor handle Ethernet traffic.

The ‘BF566 is available only as part of the “BF566eM30 eMedia Platform,” a collection of hardware and software targeting IP set-top boxes. Reflecting this target market, the ‘BF566 includes a DDR memory interface, ATAPI/ATA interface, PCI interface, and Ethernet interface, as well as four ITU-R 656 video ports.

In another first for the family, the ‘BF534, ‘BF536, and ‘BF537 are AEC-Q100 qualified for use in automotive applications. Analog Devices says it will also introduce automotive-qualified versions of the existing ‘BF531, ‘BF532, and ‘BF533 devices early this year.

All of the new Blackfin processors are currently sampling, with full production expected in the second quarter of this year. Per-unit pricing for 10,000-unit orders ranges from $8.05 for the 300 MHz ‘BF536 to $16.55 for the 600 MHz ‘BF537. ADI has not announced pricing for the BF566eM30 eMedia Platform.

Analog Devices has also revealed plans for three future family members, the ‘BF539, ‘BF543, and BF563. According to Analog Devices, these parts will add peripherals such as USB ports.
